Left 4 Dead Game Coming Out This Week!

I felt compelled to download the Left 4 Dead demo on Xbox Live yesterday just to see what the game looks like and how it performs. I don't normally play games with hordes of monsters that you have to anniliate to get to the end, but I've seen so much press on it lately that I thought I might as well check it out.

For starters, the game is quite frankly gorgeous. The design team did a great job on the cinematics and design of the game. I can't say enough of the game in that respect. I proceeded to play the game as Bill in the subway (you can pick one of four characters to play and two different campaigns in the demo), and I was enjoying just picking off the zombies at the beginning, one at a time while I wandered about with the other 3 characters. I didn't mind too much when one or two jumped out at me. Scared the crap out of me, but I got them down pretty quick, along with my helpful AI characters. But when we began our descent into the subway itself, that's when I lost my will to play the game. In the commercials, you might have seen the shot with the many zombies coming across the street from right to left of the camera. Well, that happens in the game, and it happens a lot. Once they begin to attack, they attack from all sides. It becomes apparent why you need to walk along in the game with your fellow characters each turned a different way watching for incoming zombies. As you might be able to gather, I didn't enjoy the zombie onslaught, but I think it might have been better if I had real people playing the other 3 characters. That way I would have known if the other 3 players were watching my back for me. You know, the "you look north, I'll look south" deal. That way the zombies can't sneak up on anyone. As I said before, the design was awesome, and technically the gameplay was excellent, as it was running off of Valve's engine; same one used for Half-Life. Just too many zombies for my taste! I'm proud of the fact that our nation chose the first African-American as President today. If you voted against him today, be sure to go back through and see what he stands for. See what idea you can get behind that he has put forth and try your best to support it. Some people think the only thing we can do as citizens is cast the vote and then watch and see what happens, but it's not. You can get out and try to make your country better just by volunteering or becoming active in your own little neighborhood or town. So, start tomorrow by trying to make a difference!

Vintage 1958 BMW R26 Motorcycle

I found this great vintage 1958 BMW R-Series (R26) motorcycle on eBay just now. The seller states that it only has about 17,000 miles which is great. Here's a little information on the bike:

Vehicle Description

You are looking at an excellent example of a vintage BMW single. The bike is in excellent original condition! Bike includes original manual, tools, and air pump. When I purchased the BMW R26 7 years ago it had recently been serviced, it started on the first kick and ran very well. The bike was a real joy to ride and as you can tell from the pictures is a real "head-turner" and will be the envy of friends. This is a great bike to add to your collection or to start a new one. You could ride this bike every day or just park it in your living room or office and admire it. Please email me with any questions.

History: I am the 4th owner of this bike. The bike was brought over in the 1960's by an elderly German man who owned and cared for it for 37 years. This bike has matching frame/engine numbers and is probably the finest example of an original vintage BMW single that you will find. The bike is not some "tarted up, over restored trailer queen". The bike shows signs of 50 years of normal well cared for wear such as wear on the tread of the kick start lever, blueing of the exhaust header, some battery leakage around the battery box (not bad), a few touched up scratches and some dry rubber around the storage compartment gasket and speedometer bezel gasket. The bike is 100% original. The bike is a 250cc shaft driven single cylinder. Before displaying the bike in my office for several years I rode it about 60 miles. The bike ran excellent, had great power, and shifted smoothly through the gears. the bike has a 6 volt electrical system and lights and horn work fine. The bike has mounting holes which are factory plugged for a rear rack or pillion seat. I really like the look of the bike without these. I will try to answer any questions promptly. Directory Submissions for Websites

Over the last few months, from reading Digital Point forums, I had just about decided that submitting my sites to directories (outside of the top tier like Google, Yahoo, and MSN) was really something that could cause my websites to drop in value on Google. And if the site were to have any PR (Page Rank), that it would lose some or all of it.

Well, a little secret: people on forums [and blogs :) ] don't always know what they are talking about. One of the secrets to successfully increasing your website's traffic is to get backlinks, and the higher the PR of a backlinked site, the better for your site. However, I've come to realize that almost any backlink you receive can be good for your site IF you have valuable content. If you are just serving MFA sites, then maybe PPC is still the way to go, and your backlinks won't have as much value.

Just as an example, I have a site that I have had for about 3 months, and nothing really has gone on during that time. Maybe 6-10 page views per day if I'm lucky. The first of last week, I decided to submit to about 50 or so directories, and now my pageviews per day have jumped to over 150! That is complete organic traffic, no PPC, no stumbles or Digg. Plus, it's already paying off as I have had over $100 in eBay purchases during this latest time period.

So, if you have a site that you just can't drive traffic to, consider using Directories to get the job done. People have differing opinions about whether manual is better than automatic. It might be best to just try a little bit of both and see what happens. It could be worth it!

Web Hosting

For the money and the more experienced webmaster, Hostgator is really the best service to use for web hosting, especially if you are hosting multiple sites. It's cheap at $7.95 per month and easy to use if you are familiar with ftp, html, php, etc. However, if you are just starting out, and really need some human contact to help support your hosting questions, Yahoo! Web Hosting is best of breed. It's dirt cheap (only $11.95 per month), free setup, and you only have to sign for a 3-month term. I used their service when I first started out and like it very much. But I moved on to HostGator when I found that I wanted to build multiple websites and would need a lot more bandwidth than I was using with Yahoo! hosting. Adbrite

I said before that I don't like to use PPC, and that's true, but if you have a site that you know can get high $ amount clicks from Adsense, then Adbrite might be for you. Adbrite is a company that runs just like Adwords, in that anyone can setup a link or banner and have it shown on individual sites based on a rate the advertiser is willing to pay.

What makes Adbrite a good solution for advertisers is that it is very possible to use keywords in a campaign on Adbrite which would send visitors to your site. Then, hopefully, these visitors would click your Adsense ads. The hope is that the Adsense on your site is paying more than you are paying for the Adbrite ads. Typically I try to keep my campaigns on Adbrite to less then 10 cents per click, and hope for a return of $2.00- $6.00 on the target Adsense ads. This could work for "Made for Adsense" sites, but I don't have those, so I can't say how it works there. My sites have good quality content within (hopefully) that keeps a visitor reading/browsing/shopping my site. I'm quite sure that if I could think of using Adbrite for MFA sites,then it is being done already.

Regardless, if you have a site with high Adsense return, you might consider using Adbrite to drive cheap traffic to your site.

Passive Income

I have gone back and forth on ways to create a passive income online for several years. But during the last 6 months, I have actually made some progress. I started using Adsense back last August,and finally managed to make it over the $100 that they require to cut a check in November. Obviously, the more traffic you receive the more clicks you get with Adsense, but that's not a real good way to create income, especially when just starting out. I think that's probably why so many people quit within the first few months of trying to make something with a blog, website, or whatever. It is very difficult to get enough traffic to see results those first few months.

So, anyway, I found the Digital Point forum sometime in there, and discovered Clickbank. I was a little leary of Clickbank at first, because a lot of the products on the site are a little scammy. But once you pick through the, um lack of a better word, garbage, there are some very good products.

To get back to the point, by using Clickbank to promote a diet plan called Fat Loss 4 Idiots, I've been able to go from $100 in 4 months to $300/month for January and February of this year. I keep expecting the sales to die on this one, but it just hasn't and continues to be my main source of income.

There is a little secret to my success: My only costs so far on the diet has been $9.95 per month to promote the diet on eBay. That's right, I don't promote with PPC. I realize most people make far more than $300/month by using PPC, but they have to pay far more, and hope they don't get a lot of tire-kickers. I'm extremely happy with my $20 out of pocket expense to make the $700+ so far. .

Lending Club

Most people interested in Peer-to-Peer Lending have heard of Prosper. But now, there is a great new product everyone should try called Lending Club. As with Prosper, you are able to sign up as a lender/borrower or both :). But the thing I like most, as a lender with Lending Club, is that it isn't in an auction format. Prosper causes lenders to bid on an interest rate of a loan, and the better the loan looks to the lender, the less they are willing to receive in return to be a part of the loan. With Lending Club, borrowers are assigned a specific interest rate up front, and if a lender decides that a loan has good value, they are able to invest at that rate. Extremely simple, and it keeps the lender from risking more than they so choose. If you sign-up now, through this special link, they will give you $25 risk-free to try their lending process ($25 is the minimum you can invest).

So, give it a try if you, like me would rather not use Proper's auction process. At this time, I still prefer Prosper over Lending Club if you are a borrower. The borrower has more power with Prosper.

I've built a little site to host a few mixed drink recipes (which I will be adding to pretty much daily). I also added an Amazon store to it as well. In fact, I've added a store to the Pop-Up Free Arcade and Blood Sugar Aware as well, as the setup for the store is pretty easy. So, today I was pilfering around a little, and noticed there aren't too many websites for facebook layouts, so I bought facebookstripper.com (since sold). I've parked it on Sedo, but I don't think I'll leave it parked for long. It automatically registered with them as an adult site, so I doubt my wife would be too happy if she found out about that!

Continuing on my web development experiment, I've purchased the domain, Blood Sugar Aware. I'm hoping to turn it into a directory for diabetic and hypoglycemia sufferers. Probably start out with some good links to spam-less websites on Google (going to be difficult). Hopefully, I can follow it up with some really good content. I deal with the hypoglycemia problem, so this is an important website for me.

MySpace is probably good for a lot of things, and apparently scams are becoming more of a problem, especially with the romance scam within this article provided by Louisa Hearn of The Sydney Morning Herald:

Although romance was the last thing on his mind, he was intrigued when he received a message from an attractive Russian doctor called Lena, who claimed to like his profile.

I may get a little more current on using this blog as I now have opened up a new website The Pop-Up Free Arcade. I got the idea because every gamesite that I access seems to have just an overwhelming amount of pop-up ads. So, I thought people might appreciate a site that didn't include that. Of course, I'll have ads to try and help pay for my work on it, but I think it will be successful without the pops. Time will only tell.

One of the best books I've read in quite some time was "Me Talk Pretty One Day" by David Sedaris. He is one of the more humorous writers at this time. His writings are pseudo-nonfiction, largely based on his own life, and this is by far the best one so far. If nothing else, try the link, and read a little of it online to see for yourself.

This is a pretty neat site I found today. It allows you to input your checking account entries online, and have instant access to spending graphs based on how you specify your transactions. I was a little worried about it at first, but then I found that it is totally up to the user on what information is put in (no links to checking accounts or account numbers), so there really is no way for anyone to hack the site and receive information about you that would cause harm. If I could change anything, I would probably have the date fields pop-up a little mini calendar instead of the scroll box to input the date. But everything else seems perfect. Check it out!

Survivor Advertisers Pull Out

I wrote about this a couple of weeks ago, suggesting that this show probably wasn't going to work, and it looks like some advertisers agree. Well, maybe not with me, but my ego feels better! Procter & Gamble, Johnson & Johnson, Coke, Home Depot, Campbell Soup and others have said "no" to advertising on the show this year. According to this article, at least one executive said the show was "in bad taste". I have to agree. I think far too many people gave of themselves to get equality for minorities for a show that is well past its prime to have us rehash here in 2006. It's just not good for anybody.

Broadband Speed Test

I've been having a lot of trouble lately with my broadband speed (thanks Comcast). Specifically, the service just drops, especially at night between 8 and 10 pm EST. So, I searched for a site that did the best speed test on my connection, and the ones at DSLreports.com seem to work the best for me. Since I am in Florida, I use the Miami, FL link, but they have links from SanFran, LA, Seattle, Parsippany, and others, so you should be able to find one that will work for you. The links are about halfway down the page, so just scroll until you see them or search for the words "Test speed".

A lot of people are bashing this guy a little today because his death in this way seems almost inevitable. But, really, how many of us would like to die doing something that we absolutely love? I think if you've gotta go, it should be just this way. Well, not for me, I hate snorkeling and I'm not too kean on animals, but for this guy there really wasn't a better way. Prayers to his family. My family enjoyed living through this guy's life when his shows were on. He gave a lot of entertainment to a lot of people, and nobody can take that away from him.
